Making the Work
Making my sculptures requires a series of physical labors. Creating new plaster molds, mixing casting slip, glazes, enamel paint and flocking.
Studio made and industry made plaster molds.
When humid, molds need to be forced dried and the cat's bed benefits from proximity of the space heater too.
Multiple cast objects are kept damp in a series of plastic bag tents.
After scoring and slipping, parts are attached.
Cast parts are prepared by removing seems and unwanted portions.
Not often, but inevitable, pieces break.
Repairing broken pieces and fixing inevitable cracks are aided by using a lighted magnifying glass.
Multiple parts are assembled in preparation for addition to the main body of the sculpture.
Four different cast clay parts are attached to each other and comprise the "main body" of the sculpture.
The class bird often joins me in the studio, but editorializes like crazy.
Each subsequent part is cut and attached one at a time.
The building process includes loads of loosely placing parts and extrapolating their successful placement.
Multiple parts are cast, cleaned in preparation for assembly.
Drying is taken slow and repairing cracks as appear can be expected.
A computer and digital projector are used to project, compose and manipulate surface imagery.
Composing the imagery means a lot of physical and digital manipulations.
After lines of imagery is completed, the sillhoette is painted with enamel paint.
